L.A.R.A - Animal Rescue & Farm Sanctuary is a Registered Charity dedicated to rescuing and re-homing larger farm type animals, also known as 'lifestyle' animals or 'farm pets'. Perfectly located in a big farming community, we are here to help 'lifestyle' animals that are either injured, sick, surplus, or need re-homing due to change in people's circumstances that own these pets. We don't interfere with farming or take in large commercial herds, instead we work with farmers and help bridge the gap between farmers and the community wishing to own a farm pet on their lifestyle block. We take in many rescued animals from Animal Control, SPCA, other rescues, farmers, and private individuals and help and help find them homes as pets.
Our Sanctuary side to the farm provides a safe haven for those animals non-rehomable, or sponsored. The farm relies totally on Sponsorship and/or Donations.
Peafowl - ongoing rescue!
We are currently undergoing a huge peafowl rescue! The land where these beautiful birds currently live is being redeveloped, and so we have been asked to help remove as many as possible before their current home is destroyed forever. Every week we are busy travelling 2 hours each way to their destination, and trapping as many as we can. This is a very time consuming job, and thanks to our wonderful volunteer feeders, they are being fed every day. Sometimes we trap several, sometimes none. We have a few months to get them all out to safety but our biggest problem is finding them new homes. These are very big birds but they are very docile, do not peck people and are easily fed on a grains mix, dove mix, or similar. They also like treats of fruits and veggies. We cannot guarantee how many we will trap each week, but to date we have rehomed 37.. and counting. If you are interested in adopting one of our rescued peafowl, you will need a large enclosed pen to keep them in for a while before releasing to free range. Peafowl are extremely territorial so once they get used to their new feeder, their new home and its sounds and smells etc, they will usually remain. Obviously these birds are not suitable for a town back garden. We also do not wish to rehome them to be exploited for feathers, or want people to use them to breed for meat purposes. Either use our enquiry form in the 'contact us' section, or message Charlea via Facebook to express interested in adopting. There is a list and no guarantee which weeks we are successful in trapping and have some at the farm ready to adopt. We had asked people simply 'make a donation' for them, but sadly so many expect them for free, so we have now put an adoption fee of $50 on the peacocks to help reimburse our fuel and feed costs. Thank you for looking.
